Advanced Dry Eye Care with IDRA Diagnosis and LLLT Treatment

When dry eye symptoms continue despite simple lifestyle changes, artificial tears, or eyelid care, a more detailed evaluation may be needed. Dry eye is not the same for every person. Some patients have reduced tear production, while others have tears that evaporate too quickly because the oil-producing glands in the eyelids are not working properly. This is why advanced diagnosis plays an important role in choosing the right treatment.

IDRA is an advanced, non-invasive dry eye diagnostic system. It does not treat dry eye directly. It helps ophthalmologists analyze the tear film and eyelid oil glands to understand what type of dry eye a patient has and what may be causing it.

For dry eye evaluation, IDRA can assess:

Tear film stability Tear volume

Tear composition Lipid layer quality Meibomian gland structure and function Tear evaporation patterns

Low-Level Light Therapy, or LLLT , is one advanced treatment option for patients with dry eye related to meibomian gland dysfunction. LLLT uses gentle light energy around the eyelid area to support meibomian gland function, help improve the quality of the oil layer in the tear film, and reduce inflammation that may contribute to dryness and irritation. This detailed information allows ophthalmologists to better understand what is causing the dryness. For example, if the test shows poor lipid layer quality or blocked meibomian glands, the patient may have evaporative dry eye, which often requires treatment focused on improving gland function rather than using eye drops alone.

Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD , occurs when the small oil glands inside the eyelids become blocked or do not work properly. Without enough healthy oil in the tear film, tears evaporate too quickly, leading to evaporative dry eye.

Together, IDRA and LLLT offer a more targeted approach to dry eye care at the Dry Eye Clinic at Bumrungrad International Hospital. IDRA helps identify the cause, while LLLT helps address one of the common underlying problems: poor meibomian gland function. With the right diagnosis and treatment plan, dry eye care can become more precise, personalized, and effective.
