Eye Evaluation and Checkup: A Guide to Healthy Vision Clear vision supports daily life, from learning and working to moving safely and connecting with others. Since many eye problems develop quietly, regular eye evaluations help protect vision, detect concerns early, and support eye health at every age.

A comprehensive eye checkup may include:

Regular eye evaluations can help detect common and complex conditions, including:

Visual acuity testing to assess how clearly you see

Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism Dry eye and eye strain Cataracts Glaucoma Retinal disease Eye complications related to systemic diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure Eyelid problems such as tumors or infections

Refraction testing to determine whether glasses or contact lenses are needed Eye pressure measurement to screen for glaucoma risk Pupil response and eye movement assessment Slit-lamp examination to evaluate the structures at the front of the eye Retinal examination to evaluate the back of the eye Specialized tests when needed for specific symptoms or conditions

Adults should also seek medical attention for sudden vision changes, eye pain, flashes of light, new floaters, double vision, persistent redness, or difficulty seeing at night.

Children also need eye checkups, even when they do not complain about vision problems. Young children may not realize that their vision is unclear, and some eye conditions are easier to treat when detected early.

A child’s eye evaluation may include checks for: Pupil response Eye movement Lazy eye Misaligned eyes General eye health Visual acuity Color vision Three-dimensional vision

Recommended eye checkups for children include:

First eye examination between 3 and 6 months of age

Does not focus well on objects Has an abnormal reflection or white spot in the pupil Appears to have a lazy or misaligned eye Has excessive tearing, redness, or chronic discharge Squints, moves closer to objects, or holds objects too close to their eyes to see clearly Has a family history of eye problems Parents should seek an eye evaluation promptly if a child:
