Introduction The prostate is a gland found only in males. Its function is to produce seminal fluid. Of chestnut shape, it wraps around the upper part of the urethra and cannot be seen or felt externally (outside the body). is a common disease and its occurrence is often related to age. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition in which the prostate gland is abnormally large. Wrapping around the upper part of the urethra, when enlarged, the prostate may press on the urethra and make it narrower, causing patients to experience urinary obstruction. An enlarged prostate may also cause the muscular wall of the bladder to thicken as it needs to work harder to force the urine through the narrowed urethra. The thickened bladder wall means the bladder’s reduced capacity to store urine thus leading to frequent urination and possibly sudden urges to urinate. 50 % 60 80 70 Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Evidence suggests that BPH occurs in and in of men about of men years old %
